BMW has started the project to develop the X8 SUV. According to recent reports, the BMW X8 will have an M performance version that will rely on a plug-in hybrid propulsion system with about 750 horsepower.

A few months ago, a series of information appeared regarding a new BMW SUV. It will be called the X8 and will become the new top of the range in the Bavarian manufacturer’s portfolio. According to sources close to the company, the future X8 will use the platform of the current BMW X7, and the project would be coordinated and developed exclusively by people from the M performance division.

The latest reports say that the model will take over the engines from the offer of the current X7 and will be available both in the seven-seater version and in a six-seater version. At the same time, the Germans will prepare a top X8 M variant. It would rely on a plug-in hybrid propulsion system consisting of a 4.4-liter V8 engine and an electric motor. In total, the propulsion system will deliver about 750 horsepower.

At the moment, there is no information on the prepared battery or the autonomy in the electric mode. The future BMW X8 M (known internally as Project Rockstar) would also rely on the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, a technology that debuted for the first time on the current BMW M5 generation. At this time, there is no information about a future M version equipped only with internal combustion engine. The future BMW X8 is set to be unveiled for the first time in the second half of 2021.
