Android Auto 17.0 Beta Arrives While Google Prepares Bigger Changes for Drivers

8Views

Google has started rolling out Android Auto 17.0, though the update currently stays limited to users willing to run beta software. The new version already reached early testers, and anyone outside the beta program still has a path to installation through manual APK sideloading on Android smartphones.

Despite the higher version number, the release itself stays fairly restrained. Google treats these updates as standard software progressions instead of major milestones, so Android Auto 17.0 mainly targets internal refinements and optimization work. Large visual redesigns or dramatic interface additions are absent for now.

There is another reason drivers might want to slow down before installing the beta build. Test versions usually carry more bugs, especially for people relying on Android Auto every day inside their cars. Google tends to move stable Android Auto builds into public rollout quickly once testing goes smoothly, often in under one week if serious issues fail to appear.

The broader story sits elsewhere anyway. Google already confirmed multiple additions planned for later this year, and Android Auto 17.0 appears more like preparation work ahead of those changes than a headline-grabbing release on its own.

Widgets stand among the biggest upcoming additions. Earlier beta builds already hinted at the functionality, then Google confirmed the project during I/O this month. Unlike Apple CarPlay, Android Auto will integrate widgets directly into the primary interface rather than separating them onto another dedicated screen. Users will reveal them with a swipe gesture inside the Coolwalk layout.

Once widgets become active, Android Auto shifts into a three-panel arrangement. Google plans support for weather information, smart-home controls, contacts, and photo access. Eventually, widgets already existing on Android phones should function inside Android Auto as well. Or at least, Google says so for now.

Video playback support is also heading toward Android Auto. YouTube ranks among the first major names joining the app ecosystem, and Google plans 60 FPS playback support for vehicles equipped with high-resolution displays. Playback remains restricted while parked, though. Moving vehicles automatically trigger an audio-only mode designed by Google for safety reasons.

There is one extra detail tied to YouTube. Drivers wanting background audio after switching away from video playback will need a Premium subscription because the audio-only experience belongs to the paid tier.

Google says these larger additions are not live yet, with rollout scheduled for later this year. In the meantime, the latest downloadable build carries the full version number Android Auto 17.0.1621 beta.
