The legendary car has flown right into the top spot as the most expensive Mustang ever sold in the world, that did actually fly.
It’s a 1965 Shelby GT350R prototype, driven or rather flown better said by Ken Miles.
Not only was it the first to race and win this prototype also doubled up as an engineering mule to test parts for the 34 customer R-models, and as a demonstrator for prospective customers at the time. Most of the parts on the car were exclusively designed for it and fitted for the prototype.
It was sold in 1966 to a Ford Employee for 4.000 USD (around 32,000 USD adjusted for inflation), disappearing from the public view in the 1970’s being rediscovered again in 1989, after some years and a couple of owners ending in it being restored to its 1965 look and feel.
The car was, and still is to this day a legend and the price tag that was put on it, was not about the car, but about its amazing history and all the events the car has attended to and won either drove or just aesthetically, the car looking fresh and new up to present when it was sold for the huge ammount of 3.85 million USD.
The beatifull model can only rise in price from now on just for 2 main reasons, the first being obviously its age and the second the fact that it wasn’t brutally restored like they do these days, but was restored back when people cared about the cars and imported car parts weren’t a thing which weighs a lot for a car collector, most of the parts on it still being original pieces made by Ford themselves and after all that the car still has its original retro look and feel that makes the driver wish they were back in 1965 driving this beast on an empty street.
It was restored so good that it won multiple contests and awards such as the Pebble Bear and other events.
The famous picture above is Ken at Green Valley Raceway in 1965 presumably trying to finesse his take-off and landing maneuvers, he was literally a pilot that day.
The famous flying Mustang has been sold at Mecum’s Indy last week for the whapping amount of 3.85 million USD and took The Bullitt Ford Mustang Steve McQueen drove’s place for the world’s most expensive Mustang, the Bullitt being sold for the close amount of 3.74 million USD.
