AMG Adjusts Course as Inline-Six Power Replaces C43 And A V8 Re-Emerges For C63

2Views

Mercedes-AMG appears to be quietly undoing one of its most controversial recent decisions. The company is now aware that its previous strategies didn’t work as expected after its decision to downsize its engine lineup. The feedback received from customers forced the company to rethink its strategy and decide to bring back the inline sixes into the spotlight.

Complete Powertrain Information

At the center of this shift is the confirmation that AMG is phasing out its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in several key models.

According to comments from interim AMG boss Michael Schiebe, the solution is straightforward. AMG will be “replacing our four-cylinder” with an inline-six, and crucially, “the engine will also come to the C-Class.”

The engine in question is an inline-six turbocharged 3.0-liter, sourced from the CLE 53. In the C53 and GLC 53 versions, this particular engine outputs 443 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque.

Schiebe was explicit about the configuration, stating, “That means we will also have C 53 in our portfolio. We’re taking the combustion engine from the CLE 53. No hybrid engine, pure inline six-cylinder.” These models will sit below the E 53, which uses a plug-in hybrid version of the same engine delivering 577 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm).

Schiebe also admitted AMG expected broader acceptance for the highly strung four-cylinder. However, adapting that engine to Euro 7 standards would be “quite difficult,” a key reason behind the move back to six cylinders.

Other Specifications

Spy photographers have spotted the C53 wagon prototype in testing, with the mule using a new body that is expected to debut in 2027 as a 2028 model year vehicle. This one will feature a new front end with updated rear lights. With tests ahead of the model`s release, it is clear enough that the company is thoroughly securing its lineup development ahead of its time.

The New C63

The C 53’s role is now much clearer. As rumors state, it will replace the C43 and not the C63, as it will be discontinued, along with its four-cylinder plug-in hybrid engine with massive 671 horspepower and 1,020 Nm of torque.

More interestingly, AMG has confirmed development of a Euro 7-compliant 4.0-liter twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8. Schiebe said, “Yes, we have developed a V8 engine that is EU7-capable and that we will offer in some series.” While details remain under wraps, reports point to the CLE 63 as the first recipient, with the C 63 expected to follow.

Conclusion

AMG isn’t abandoning electrification, but it is acknowledging that character still matters. By restoring the inline-six to the heart of the C-Class range and preparing a V8 comeback for the C 63, the brand seems intent on rebuilding trust with enthusiasts who felt left behind by the downsizing push.
